Government Leadership partnership with UTW
The most interesting aspect of my urban government and organizations class is that the program developed a partnership with the city to hosting a series of sessions that are open to the public. These sessions start in January with the last session on March 6th. These discussions are hosted in the keystone auditorium and will run on scheduled dates from 6:45 to 9 p.m.
They have not published a detailed speaker list, but we were told the speakers will include Mayor Bill Baarsma, city manger Eric Anderson, the Chief of police and many other Tacomans involved in local government.
So… if you want to come to class with me let me know and I’ll save you a seat..

Tacomans seeking a deeper understanding of how government works are invited to attend a series of free public sessions designed to empower citizens and involve them more deeply in city affairs.
The Government Leadership Institute, a cooperative effort of the City of Tacoma’s Neighborhood Council Office and the University of Washington Tacoma’s Urban Studies Program, will offer the sessions from Jan. 9 to March 6 on a mix of Tacoma issues and topics.
The sessions will be held from 6:45 to 9 p.m. at the Keystone Auditorium, 1900 Commerce St. The subjects are as follows:
- Jan. 9: From here to eternity: A history of governance in Tacoma
- Jan. 11: Knowing when to hold ‘em: Development and Tacoma’s neighborhoods
- Jan. 23: A maze in grace: Intergovernmental coordination and cooperation
- Jan. 30: Seeing red: Municipal finance and budgeting
- Feb. 6: Escape to your own backyard: Land use planning and democracy
- Feb. 13: There ought to be a law: Creating a system for safety and criminal justice
- Feb. 22: Is there room at the inn?: Housing costs and keeping a home in Tacoma
- Feb. 27: Am I blue? Voting and elections in Washington State and Pierce County
- March 6: Google this: Perceptions of Tacoma and the media
A wrap up party will take place on March 6 with a class critique and open discussion.
No registration is necessary, and participants may attend one or all of the sessions. For more information, contact Elton Gatewood, Neighborhood Council Office, at (253) 591-5229.
