More Power for Kexp
There is some hope for those of us feeling the void left by Kexp and their departure from Tacoma earlier this month. Here is part of a very nice email from Tom Mara at Kexp.
In early January, after conferring with the owners of KXOT, we announced online we would be able to keep operating the station for a few more weeks. We then announced that January 31would be the last day of broadcast. The owners have turned off the transmitter to begin building and installing a new facility.
Please know that many people put their heart into making this a go, including the owners of the channel, PRC. It was not a channel we owned—it was a lease. Financing became too expensive for us and we could no longer afford it; we simply had to make the adult decision to let it go. The owners are now working on finding another public radio station to operate
the channel.
By the way, we plan to increase the power of the 90.3 signal from 3300 watts to 4700 watts. A soon as we determine a power-up date, we’ll post it on the web. The new transmitter will send more energy toward the southwest and
southeast. Hopefully, you will begin to receive KEXP to a greater extent Again, I know this is awful for several of our listeners. But please know we tried very hard to make a go of it.
Please feel free to call me if you have any questions or want to talk.
