Art at Work Month
November celebrates the 5th anniversary of Art at Work month. Its goal is to illustrate the collective talent in our city and get people involved in the arts. This month is not just for artists…it is an opportunity for all community members to be an active part of Tacoma’s cultural life. Tacoma is ripe with activity and offers a multitude of events. There really is something for everyone.
Pick up a brochure and check out what’s happening in November. You will find a calendar of events, listing of art exhibits as well as classes & workshops, information about our Arts Symposium, local coffee houses offering specials on Buy an Artist Coffee day, new public art created for the Tacoma Police substations, information about the 2006 AMOCAT Arts Awards, and a complete list of 2005-2006 funding recipients. Pick up a brochure at various locations around Tacoma or download a copy here. Please note that this is a large file and will require time to download.
The Grand Cinema: 72 Hour Film Competition

I ran across the web site for the Grand Cinema and I was surprised. I’ve seen many a movie at this great little volunteer operated non-profit art-house theater, but I didn’t realize they have all kinds of events happening for film fans.
For example… the 72 hour film competition.
From the Grand Cinema’s web site:
These films were created between May 18 and May 21 in Tacoma and screened for the first time at the Rialto Theater, May 25. For information about next year’s Film Competition or to get on a filmmaker’s distribution list e-mail grandcinema@earthlink.net.
Each film had to include:
- The line of dialog “well, you know what they say” *bA Tacoma Park
- Binoculars, a telescope, or a magnifying glass
- And someone had to get splashed.
We are too late for the Tacomaness sponsored entry but you can click on this link to watch the films created this year.
The Grand is also hosting all kinds of educational events including film school and a summer discussion series.
If you’re interested in learning more swing by their site, sign up to volunteer and be sure to check out another local blog run by Shawn Sylvian, the Grand Cinema’s Artistic Director.
And speaking of film and blogs, MurderedruM one of our forum contributors writes about all things film related. Visit his site at http://www.murderedrum.com/
A Tacoma Poma
I’ve been meaning to contribute to this site for a while.
I’ve also been meaning to do something with a series of Tacoma poems I put together a while ago.
So now the two come together in a bit of serendipitydoodah.
So here’s a bit of something-or-other. It’s actually three poems about fairies (!) in this holy city.
