T’was quite the brutal night. Upon my arrival at what I believed to be a modest 9:30 pm, I was stunned to see James, Michael, Brian, and Greg (as well as a table full of various collected PWers) still conscious, having been there since 4 pm, working their way down the list pint by pint. Finally, slamming down a pint glass emptied of PT Barley Wine, Michael proudly announced the draft list completion. “Great job, now start over, from the top!” challenged barstud and beer connoisseur John. Hmmmm…tempting, John. More tastes were had, but alas, as the last swig was downed, the crowd diminished, leaving only the hardcore and the too-drunk-to-stand. But a fun night was had by all, especially those who were lucky enough to get some Rogue Brutal Bitter on the Randall…yummm. Cheers PW people! Thanks for a crazy night. Thanks for ruining my Thanksgiving.

South Sound baby boomers wanted by the Peace Corps
Your adventures are only just beginning. The Peace Corps believes that no single group has more to offer in terms of experience, maturity, and demonstrated ability. Because there’s no upper age limit to serve in the Peace Corps, it’s never too late. In fact, Volunteers who are well into their 80’s have served and continue to serve. Join us for an evening of pictures and stories about Peace Corps service for the +50 Volunteer. Neal Hansen, a regional recruiter and local area returned Peace Corps Volunteer who served with his wife after the age of 50, will facilitate a panel of other local area Volunteers who also served in the Peace Corps after the age of 50. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the Peace Corps experience is welcome to attend. Because space may be limited, RSVP’s are highly encouraged. Please e-mail seattle@peacecorps.gov or call 800.424.8580 with the number of people in your party.

1 hellish quarter down, 1 more to go
Yes i’m still here, i didn’t do anything crazy like move to Tenino or anything. i mean come on we all know there’s no such thing as Teninoness. . . You see, somehow i decided it would be a smart idea to continue to work full time AND go to class 4 nights a week till 9pm. I am overjoyed with the realization that all my tests and papers are done and i’ve made a solemn vow to never again take a class requiring a number 2 pencil and scan-tron sheet. I’m happy to find out that my wife and dog still remember me, it’s going to be slightly odd over the next few nights as we quietly do absolutely nothing together.
Looking around the neighborhood I see a few interesting things have changed. My good friend Derek’s taken on a whole new set of adventures in life which I think is very cool and exciting. Another great friend Marty Campbell’s announced he’s running for city council and that too will be a great adventure.
i’m not sure what’s in store for Tacomaness over the long term, but in the short term i’ve closed down the forums and am happily pointing folks over to Exit133.com’s forum, which are far more lively, far more frequently moderated and far less likely to be the target of those annoying forum spammers and their porn links.
If you still stop by let me know how you’ve been and with any luck we’ll figure out something interesting to do with this place.
Winter Storm Crosby!
Well I hope everyone is safe and sound! Our neighbors woke us up at 1:45am or so because the enormous tree in our front yard gave way and crashed into the house across the street. Everyone’s safe and nobody was hurt but it was quite the scare. If the wind had been blowing the opposite direction our house would have easily split in two. It’s hard enough sharing the bed with the dog and cat, spooning a 150ft fir is not my idea of fun. I don’t know why winter storms don’t get named the same way hurricanes do, but I decided to go ahead and name this one after legendary Tacoman Bing Crosby. It’s so close to Christmas it seemed fitting. How’d your neighborhood hold up?

Jeremy Enigk, Tacoma, Dec 29th!
Jeremy Enigk of Sunny Day Real Estate and the Fire Theft fame is stopping by in T-town for an all ages show at Hells Kitchen this Month. I’ve been a great big fan of his for just about as long as I’ve been a great big fan of things, so I’ll most definitely be at this show. If you are unfamiliar with Mr Enigk’s work, stop by his myspace page for a sample, I think you’ll like it.
Many years ago Joann and I had the good fortune to hang out with the band for a bit in Bellingham when they were touring with Rose Blossom Punch. It was one of those awkward moments where you try to muster up the courage to say something slightly intelligent and meaningful. Well in this case, I believe the only thing I could manage to say was …. “ummm i really like your music” Then I was stricken back into shyness, Oh well.. I still really like his music and it’s a giant bonus that I can walk to the show! Hope to see some of you all there as well.
Brewery District Design Concepts

What happens when you take a group of University of Idaho architecture students and toss them into Tacoma’s Brewery District as part of a class assignment?? Well with any luck nobody’s car gets broken into and you end up with some very interesting concepts and fresh ideas for an urban design or adaptive reuse project. Here are some details about a public meeting where you can see what they’ve come up with.
Save the Date!
When: Wednesday, December 6, 6 pm
Where: Whitman Elementary, 1120 S 39th St
What: University of Idaho architecture and design students will present design concepts for the Lincoln Business District and portions of the Brewery District.
Summary: This fall, senior architecture students at the University of Idaho traveled to Tacoma to work on design projects as a component of a studio class. After touring Tacoma, the Lincoln District and Brewery District were selected for their historic character and potential for neighborhood visioning, urban design, urban infill, or adaptive reuse projects. The students will present their concepts at a public meeting on Wednesday, December 6 at 6 pm. All interested members of the public, City officials, neighborhood residents, business owners, and Neighborhood Council members are invited to attend. It is hoped that these concepts will spark conversation about the future direction of Tacoma neighborhoods.

Holiday Cheer at the Parkway

I was really excited when I found out the great folks at the Parkway Tavern were planning to bring together more than a dozen seasonal beers for a WinterFest celebration. Well I survived the event and as far as I can remember it was a great success. I’ve lived within a mile of the Parkway for about 7 years now and the place was absolutely packed, I’ve never seen anything like this, it was quite insane really! At one point I thought I heard Derek yell that they’d run out of glasses. We had a great time and didn’t get anywhere close to trying everything.
On yea, so what was on tap??
- Jolly Roger 2005 and 2005
- Dick’s Winter Ale
- Stone’s Double Bastard
- Laguinta’s GnarlyWine
- Hale’s Way Heavy
- Boundary Bay’s Cabin Fever
- North Coast Old Rasputin Imp. Stout
- Elysian’s Bifrost
- DogfishHead’s 90 Minute IPA
- Cask Jubelale
- Fullsail’s Wreck the Hall’s
- Diamondknot Ho-Ho Ale
- Fish Winterfish
I stopped back by on Friday and several of these beers are already gone, but there’s still a great line up so get over there before they are gone.
Art at Work: November 2006
Here’s a quick plug for a great Tacoma organization and set of events throughout November showcasing Tacoma’s art community. Take a moment to pick up one of their brochures or visit their web site for the details.
Tacomaculture.orgArt at Work Month
November celebrates the 5th anniversary of Art at Work month. Its goal is to illustrate the collective talent in our city and get people involved in the arts. This month is not just for artists…it is an opportunity for all community members to be an active part of Tacoma’s cultural life. Tacoma is ripe with activity and offers a multitude of events. There really is something for everyone.
Pick up a brochure and check out what’s happening in November. You will find a calendar of events, listing of art exhibits as well as classes & workshops, information about our Arts Symposium, local coffee houses offering specials on Buy an Artist Coffee day, new public art created for the Tacoma Police substations, information about the 2006 AMOCAT Arts Awards, and a complete list of 2005-2006 funding recipients. Pick up a brochure at various locations around Tacoma or download a copy here. Please note that this is a large file and will require time to download.Pierce County Neighborhood Crime

Kevin was kind enough to fill me in on a new web site that Pierce county has rolled out that allows you to view crime data within a certain radius of an address, ala google maps style. The Trib has a write up about the new tool which can give residents and future residents some really useful information about their neighborhoods. One of the more interesting aspects of this tool is the trend statistics, which helps residents understand if things are getting better or worse.
I’m happy to report that over the past year there has been a – 50.0% change (decrease) in homicides within a .5 mile radius of my house! That’s good to hear, but I’m a bit alarmed by the 47% increase in Intimidation Crime (actions which threaten, harass, or annoy the victim) in my neighborhood! I’ll have to work on being more annoying…
So what can you do about crime in your neighborhood? Here are a few helpful links and things you can do to get involved and promote positive change.
You can . . .
Contact your Community Liaison Officer for starters…then get involve with Safe Streets: Uniting Neighbors against Crime!!
or work with Crime Stoppers!!
If those don’t help, here’s even more links from The “TPD:Online”
and remember…. Take a BITE out of crime… and Say NO to Drugs!... and Only YOU can prevent forest fires! That about covers it…. right?
Feeding?

With any luck, and thanks to the nimble coding efforts of Kevin, Tacomaness is back contributing to the Feed.
With school in full swing things will be a little quite here but hopefully not silent. There have been a couple of really interesting articles in the Trib as of late… things I’ve spent a good amount of time discussing as part of my urban studies program so as soon as I finish writing a couple of papers i’ll pipe in and hopefully you will too.
Thanks for stopping by!
